Driver seriously injured after police chase ends in crash

A man has been seriously injured in a crash near Rotorua Airport not long after failing to stop for police.

Police said in a statement it received a report of a petrol drive off from a service station on State Highway 5, near Waiotapu Loop Road about 9.15am.

A short time later police located the vehicle and attempted to pull it over but the driver didn't stop.

Police say they began to follow but stopped a short time later due to the manner of the man's driving.

The vehicle crashed at 9.45am and flipped on its roof at Rotokawa on State Highway 30, north east of Rotorua.

Police, fire and ambulance attended the scene and one lane for blocked for a period.

A spokeswoman for St John said one person was in a serious condition. He was treated at the scene before being transported by ambulance to Rotorua Hospital.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating the incident.
