Replanting has started at a North Canterbury coastal park that a fire tore through 10 days ago.
A blaze sparked by fireworks burnt about 200 hectares along a 5km stretch of the coast, from Pegasus to Woodend.
The fire was largely in Tūhaitara Coastal Park, burning about a third of it.
The manager of a North Canterbury park at the centre of a large fire said it would have been worse, if there weren't so many native plants.
Greg Byrnes said replanting began this week with help from Conservation NZ volunteers and students from Deakin University in Australia.
"And they've put in about 400 to 500 plants in one of the areas that was burnt ... just north of Woodend Beach."
Byrnes said some of the badly scorched plants, such as cabbage trees, will recover once they get some decent rain.
The fire that began on 2 November caused 130 people to be evacuated from Woodend Beach Holiday Park.
Police have spoken to two rangatahi, with one referred to Youth Aid.
