The Vanuatu Electoral Commission has slightly pushed back the date for next year's snap election.

VBTC reports the commission announcing the poll, which was initially scheduled for 14 January, will now be held on 16 January.

It comes after a 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck Port Vila on Tuesday, triggering landslides and flattening buildings.

At least 16 people have died and more than 200 were injured.

The election was triggered in November by the president, Nikenike Vurobaravu, who dissolved parliament ahead of a motion-of-no-confidence in the now caretaker prime minister Charlot Salwai.

Salwai's political opponents are pushing for a court of appeal hearing on Monday into the chief justice's dismissal of their constitutional challenge against the president's actions.

Candidate nominations close on Christmas Day.

The qualified candidates will be announced on 2 January and ballot papers drawn on 3 January.
