Its CEO Sven-Olof Lindblad discussed the plans with French Polynesia's tourism minister Nicole Bouteau in Tahiti.

According to a government statement, Lindblad planned to deploy the ship National Geographic Orion, which could accommodate up to 102 passengers.

He reportedly welcomed the health protocol and testing regime put in place by French Polynesia.

The company's website currently offers a journeys from Tahiti from April.

French Polynesia opened the border to international tourism two months ago and had since then seen a recurrence of Covid-19.

The new outbreak, which has affected more than 1,300 since the beginning of August, is forecast to peak in January.
