Firefighters are battling a bush fire on the Karikari Peninsula in Northland.
The fire broke out in manuka at the southern end of peninsula about 5.30am and has now burnt through 70 hectares of bush on conservation land and some farmland.
Nine fire crews and three helicopters have been working on the blaze at the southern end of peninsula.
In a statement, Fire and Emergency District Manager Wipari Henwood said the fire was burning on conservation land and at this stage no homes or other structures were at risk.
However, Henwood later said strong easterly winds were making things more difficult.
The cause of the blaze has not yet been confirmed, but it appeared to have started near a layby on Inland Road.
One crew will remain tonight and six more crews will return tomorrow.
