One person is dead after a car smashed into a tree in Kaitaia in Northland this morning.

The police were alerted to the crash in Bank Street shortly after 6am.
A police spokesperson said the sole occupant of the car died at the scene.
Road closures remain in place and motorists are asked to avoid the area.
The serious crash unit is investigating.
