Authorities in the Federated States of Micronesia are trying to locate a passenger who escaped the aircraft which landed in the lagoon next to Chuuk International Airport on Friday.

In a statement released over the weekend, Air Niugini said divers from the United States had completed an inspection of the aircraft which confirmed that all 47 passengers and crew on board the Boeing 737-800 safely evacuated the aircraft.

Earlier there were fears that an unaccounted person was still in the plane but the dive and statements from other passengers that he was seen in one of the local dinghies transporting people to the shore, allayed those concerns.

Local authorities and the airline were continuing to investigate the location of the passenger.

Most of the passengers and crew had arrived in Port Moresby.

Two more of the passengers who had been in hospital had been released and the other four passengers are in stable condition.

Four passengers were transported to Guam for further treatment.

Air Niugini said it was assisting passengers and crew with accommodation and other needs over the coming weeks.
