Sport: Venue change for Va’a and Sailing at Pacific Games

The Va'a and sailing competitions at the 2019 Pacific Games in Samoa will now take place at a new venue.

The events were originally scheduled for Mulinuu and Vaiusu but will now be held at Mulifanua, just under an hour outside of the capital Apia, on the north-western tip of Upolu.

The Pacific Games Office said the change was made after several obstacles were encountered while planning for the use of Vaiusu Bay and Mulinu'u peninsula.

Mulifanua previously hosted the Va'a and sailing competitions during the 2007 South Pacific Games.

The 2019 Pacific Games Sports Committee, in collaboration with the Samoa Outrigger Canoe Association, believe Mulifanua is an ideal venue for Va'a "as the bay provides flat water, with pristine conditions and great views of Samoa."

The Pacific Games open on July 7 and run for two weeks, with the Va'a and sailing programmes getting underway on July 9.
