Fire and Emergency said smoke was seen coming from a building where animal feed is stored, at around 7.30am.

Ship berthing and other activities were suspended until the blaze was extinguished, about 1.5 hours later.

Port Taranaki chief executive Guy Roper said a conveyor was the likely cause.

The building suffered minimal damage.
