05:12 am on 29 May 2014

Guilty verdicts have been announced against 55 people in a mass trial in China on charges of terrorism, separatism and murder.

The trial was held in a stadium holding about 7000 spectators.

The BBC reports three of the Uighur prisoners were sentenced to death.

Chinese officials blame Uighur groups for a growing number of violent incidents across the country.

Prisoners wearing orange vests stood in the back of army trucks inside the stadium in Yili in the northwestern province of Xinjiang, near China's border with Kazakhstan. They were surrounded by armed guards.
