Fiji High Court rejects three general election petitions

09:18 am on 19 October 2002

The Suva High Court has rejected election petitions filed by three Fiji Labour Party candidates after their defeat in last year's general election.

Joeli Kalou, Lavenia Padarath and John Ali had challenged their loss to candidates of the ruling SDL party in three constituencies near Suva.

Their lawyers argued that certain types of ticks on the ballot papers should have been held as valid votes and other alleged irregularities

But Justice Filimoni Jitoko followed the recent Supreme Court ruling in the Prem Singh case and dismissed the petitions.

Under Fiji's constitution, rulings of the Court of Disputed Returns cannot be appealed.
