Many rural communities remain displaced from their villages after last month's big earthquake in Papua New Guinea's Highlands.

An International Organisation for Migration displacement tracking team has been assessing the situation in the two provinces worst hit by the 7.5 quake and subsequent aftershocks, Hela and Southern Highlands.

At least 125 people are reported to have been killed, while around 270-thousand people are estimated to be in urgent need of aid.

The IOM's PNG Chief of Mission, Lance Bonneau told Johnny Blades that their displacement mapping data provides help to UN agencies and the PNG government to coordinate their response to the disaster.
