Court upholds brothel-keeper rape sentence

The Court of Appeal has upheld the sentence for one of two Wellington brothel-keepers convicted over the rape of a teenager in the 1990s.

Sharyn Lee Hills and her husband, Gary Duffin, were jailed in August over the attack on the 14-year-old girl, who began working for them as a prostitute soon after.

Hills was given a seven year jail sentence for aiding and abetting rape, and supplying drugs to the teenager and another girl.

Duffin, the father of murdered Lower Hutt schoolgirl Karla Cardno, is serving a nine year sentence.

Hills' lawyer had argued that prejudicial evidence led to a mistrial, and her sentence was too long in comparison to Duffin's. The Court of Appeal rejected both arguments.
