Fracking questions unanswered, says commissioner

13:04 pm on 11 October 2013

The Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment has told an oil and gas symposium in Hastings several questions about fracking in Hawke's Bay remain unanswered.

About 200 people are gathered for the symposium which is hearing from all sides of the oil and gas exploration debate.

Dr Wright told the audience there were questions over where water for fracking would come from in a drought-prone region, where and how waste from oil and gas exploration will be disposed of, and how integrity of wells will be maintained in an earthquake prone area.

GNS scientist Dr Kyle Bland told the meeting there was still uncertainty over how much oil and gas is actually in Hawke's Bay.
