Spending using electronic cards has eased back as people spend less on dining out.

Official figures shows spending using credit, debit and charge charges fell a seasonally adjusted 0.3 percent in May, after a rise in April.

People spent less on fuel and in bars and restaurants, but more on clothing and household items.

Core retail spending, which strips out the vehicle related sectors, fell 0.1 percent last month.
