The Auditor-General is backing proposed new laws that aim to protect whistleblowers, particularly in the public sector.

The Protected Disclosures (Protection of Whistleblowers) Bill was introduced last June by then State Services Minister Chris Hipkins.
At the time, the Minister said the existing legislation is murky and outdated.
Auditor-General John Ryan said the proposed changes would strengthen the integrity of the public sector and help address corruption.
In a written submission, he asked that a clause in the Bill be tweaked to recognise the Auditor-General's position as an independent officer of Parliament.
