The CEO of the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says he is pleased that no charges will be laid over a TV programme on his station last month which triggered several complaints by indigenous Fijians.
Several individuals turned to the police and the Media Industry Development Authority alleging the Wasea Bhasha programme incited communal antagonism, but the prosecution said a broadcast had to do more than simply insult or cause offence to people.
However, the FBC apologised for the broadcast and Mr Sayed-Khaiyum sacked the programme producer Nemani Bainivalu after an internal inquiry found he had acted irresponsibly..

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum now says the complaint itself was ill conceived, poorly researched and ignorant and quite frivolous.
He said the complainants are not concerned citizens but affiliated with political parties.
A complainant Peter Waqavonovono, who belongs to no party, said he was disappointed but not surprised that no charges would be laid.
The Media Industry Development Authority has also been investigating the complaint but is yet to release its findings.
