Samoa and Fiji have suffered heavy first-up losses at the Junior World Rugby Championship in South Africa.

New Zealand piled 63 unanswered points on Samoa while Fiji went into the half-time break leading 12-3 against Wales before losing 44-18.

Fiji coach Sale Sorovaki says it was a classic case of a game of two halves.

"We did some things well in the first half and then we had a chat in the changing room. We said that they will come back strong and it's important for us to score first and we let them in two simple mistakes that we did just opened up the door for Wales. It was disappointing to lose but congratulations to Wales."

In other results Ireland caused a big shock by toppling the host nation, South Africa, 23-19, while Argentina edged France 18-15.

Fiji and Samoa's next match is against each other on Saturday morning.
