They have also announced a new primary school will be built in Rolleston in 2022. The announcement was made alongside the release of a growth plan for the Canterbury region today.

The plan forecast about 6000 additional student places would be needed in the region by 2030.

The building cost has already been set aside in the government's Budget this year.

The Education Minister's office and the Ministry of Education could not say when the classrooms would be built, but they would be completed by the 2030 deadline.

A Ministry of Education spokesperson said they would need to speak to the schools involved first.
