Most areas of Canterbury now have full use of utility services as the clean-up from a 7.1-magnitude earthquake moves into a recovery phase.

Just seven streets in Christchurch are without water on Monday following the quake on 4 September, although there are numerous individuals in various parts of the city who do have isolated water problems.

However, Civil Defence says the South Island city's water supply is expected to be completely restored by the end the weekend.

Electricity is also on in all areas and telecommunications are working well. Telecom has provided free pay phones across the city along with broadband hotspots.

There are still some issues regarding sewerage in Kaiapoi and some parts of Christchurch city where three pumping stations need to be rebuilt.

An estimated 10% of the city mains is affected.
