Pacific churches call for halt to seabed mining research

18:56 pm on 29 May 2013

The Pacific Conference of Churches has renewed its call to stop seabed mining research.

The call was made by the group's general-secretary, the Reverend Francois Pihaatae, who says the churches are unequivocal that no further action should be taken by regional governments.

The Reverend Pihaatae says the churches urge governments to engage - not merely consult - with their people and ensure that proper studies are made before any work is done.

Fiji has granted exploration licences to three companies keen to establish if seabed mining in Fiji waters is viable.
