A child has critical injuries following a house fire in the Auckland suburb of Point Chevalier this morning.

Emergency services responded to the fire shortly after 10:30am to a property on Rama Street.

A neighbour said he thought his house was on fire after seeing dense and thick smoke coming from his street.

The man, who did not want to be named, said he was walking his dog when he saw the smoke on his remote CCTV system.

When he got home, he saw his front neighbours' home in flames, windows smashed and several vehicles from emergency services at the scene.

The resident said he saw the child being transported to the ambulance.

Fire trucks remain at the scene with the house cordoned off and fire damage visible from the street.

A St John spokesperson said it sent two ambulances and one rapid response vehicle to the home in response.

The spokesperson said one patient with critical injuries was taken to Starship Children's Hospital.
