A person has died following a two-vehicle crash in Bay of Plenty this morning.

Police were called to Thornton Road in Matata, north west of Whakatāne about 9.20am.
A second person was been airlifted to Tauranga Hospital in a critical condition.
The road will remain closed for the next few hours while police continue a scene examination.
