20:57 pm on 4 October 2009

Churchgoers around New Zealand gathered at Samoan services on Sunday to give comfort to those who lost loved ones in the earthquake and tsunami.

A candle was lit at the Catholic Church of the Holy Family in Cannon's Creek, Porirua, to remember those who died.

Before about 150 people, Father Pene Patelehio read the names of those within the parish who lost family members this week.

One family, the Sagapolutele family, has lost 14 relatives and another lost 11.

Father Patelehio said it is important for the community to be able to come together to pray and share their grief.

Prayers were held for those still missing. A candle light vigil will continue to be held in remembrance of those lost.

Church services to pray for the tsunami victims and their families are also being held or organised in Mangere, west and central Auckland and Tokoroa.

Death now now 176

The confirmed death toll at 12.30pm on Sunday, was 176.

Five New Zealanders have died, one up from Saturday.

The figure includes three adults and two children. Another child is missing presumed dead.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade says it has grave concerns for two other New Zealanders known to have been staying at the Taufua Resort in Lalomanu at the time of the tsunami.

Inquiries are also continuing into the wellbeing of about 50 New Zealanders. However, some of these people may no longer be in Samoa.

Foreign Minister Murray McCully is urging those who have heard from friends and family in affected areas to phone the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, so officials know they're safe.
