Norfolk pleas for cable link

07:31 am on 8 November 2016

The Norfolk Island Accommodation and Tourism Association is backing calls for Norfolk Island to be connected to the new Hawaiki fibre-optic cable.

The Hawaiki cable is to be laid within 90 kilometres of the island next year.

The Association is writing to Australia's Communications Minister Mitch Fifield and the Territories Minister Fiona Nash seeking their assistance to ensure Norfolk Island doesn't miss out.

The organisation says existing broadband services, operating via satellite, have already run out of bandwidth and are hampered by unacceptable delays.

The Association has also complained at Canberra's failure to consult with Norfolk's business community, and says previous approaches to the island's Administrator Gary Hardgrave and Ms Nash have been ignored.
