Northland's Coastguard Air Patrol has joined in the search for a person missing in the water near Cape Reinga.
The person was reported to be in trouble in the water about 3.30pm after falling from rocks at Tapotupotu Bay.
The coastguard said it was the second major water incident in Northland in a week.
It said its volunteers will be on standby to help with the search tomorrow.
