An Australian senator critical of Australia's offshore detention centres has been refused a visa by Nauru.

An email published by Greens senator Nick McKim shows Nauru was advised his trip did not have the backing of Australia's Foreign Ministry.
Nauru's Consulate in Brisbane said because of this it could not support Mr McKim's visa request.
