Fiji MP unconcerned about assassination plot as police remain silent

14:48 pm on 26 November 2015

The Fiji police are refusing to comment on an email which has surfaced about an alleged plot to kill all government MPs.

FBC News says it has sighted the email, which it says was found on a computer in an internet shop in Lautoka last week.

The shop owner, who alerted police, is under military guard in hospital after he was allegedly severely beaten by police officers.

FBC News says the attack was planned to be carried out by what it calls disciplined officers during a parliamentary sitting also attended by the acting prime minister, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

A police spokesperson, Ana Naisoro, says the police will not be making any comments on the ongoing investigations.

Fiji First MP not concerned over alleged assassination plot

A Fiji First MP says he is not concerned about an alleged plot to assassinate all government members.

The minister for agriculture, Inia Seruiratu, says Fiji is a safe place and parliament has good security.

He says there are probably other assassination plots around, but that doesn't worry him.

"This is probably amongst other things that people may have in mind. I am not concerned, not at all. Fiji is safe and there is nothing to worry about. I think I am not worried at all, I am more concerned about the work that I need to do."

In recent months, there have been arrests over alleged sedition plots.

Fiji's parliament was last seized by security forces in 2006 when Frank Bainimarama overthrew the government to make himself the head of government for eight years.
