12 arrests in CNMI in bid to seize illegal taxis

13:48 pm on 22 April 2008

A crackdown on illegal taxis on Saipan in the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas has resulted in the arrest of 12 people.

The Department of Public Safety and the Attorney General say nine men were arrested for operating illegal taxis, one woman was nabbed for prostitution, and two men for overstaying in the territory.

One of the operators was treated for scratches he sustained after he tried to run away from officers.

The woman was arrested for prostitution after a Japanese man, who was with the defendant in an illegal taxi, confessed to investigators that he had sex with her for money.

Ten vehicles used in the illegal taxi operation were impounded and towed to the Department of Corrections for securing purposes.
