A former intelligence chief in Rwanda has been found dead in a hotel room in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Patrick Karegeya, 53, went into exile in 2006 after being accused of plotting against President Paul Kagame, a former ally. An international arrest warrant was issued for him in 2011.

The BBC reports he lived for the past six years in South Africa, where he had been granted political asylum.

Police have provided few details but say they are carrying out a murder investigation.
