Figures from the Accident Compensation Corporation show Christmas Day is a particularly dangerous time for injuries caused by hams.
Last year, 35 claims were made between Christmas Eve - 2 January for what are recorded as "ham incidents", with the peak on Christmas Day.
ACC says these could be accidents carving the ham or being burned while taking it out of an oven.
ACC says just because it's a festive day, kitchen hazards do not go away; plates are still hot and knives are sharp and accidents will happen if people are not vigilant.
