Organisers of a project aimed at restoring a crib that was home to New Zealand's most celebrated Maori poet have raised more than $20,000 towards the work.

The Hone Tuwhare Trust is planning to refurbish the building at Kaka Point in South Otago.

An auction of artworks in Auckland raised just over $23,000 and the trust says that after the sale it got a flurry of responses from people wanting to support and find out more about the restoration.

The goal is for the crib to be used as a writer's residence.
