The Green Party says with so much youth-related legislation tabled in Parliament at the moment, it is vital that young people have their say.

The Electoral Enrolment Centre says two-thirds of the 250,000 people not signed up to vote are aged between 18 and 29.

The Green Party launched its Young Green's campaign on Saturday afternoon with a focus on youth-related policy.

The party live-streamed a conference throughout New Zealand of its young candidates, hosted by youngest MP Gareth Hughes who is No 7 on the list and the candidate for Ohariu.

Mr Hughes says young people should be engaged with decisions that could affect them, such as the driving age, the drinking age, as well as voluntary student association membership.

He says the launch focused on job creation for graduates, cleaning up rivers and lifting children out of poverty, as well as some directly youth relevant policies of the Greens such as changing the recent internet copyright laws passed under urgency and increasing civic education in high schools.

The Electoral Commission and political parties need to work harder to engage younger people, he believes.
