The man shot in Invercargill last night is in a serious but stable condition in Southland Hospital.
Police officers and the Armed Offenders Squad were called to the city's southern suburb of Strathern shortly after 7.30pm after a man was shot.
A police spokesperson said the shooter has not yet been located and the police are appealing for any information about the incident.
A scene examination is underway in Brown Street and residents should expect a continued police presence in the area.
The spokesperson said the police want to reassure the community that it was an isolated incident.
