A senior French Polynesian assembly member, Hiro Tefaarere, has been fined for contempt of court.

The Nouvelles de Tahiti says the criminal court found him guilty of making offensive remarks to a judge last December when he was charged in an alleged mismanagement case involving the airport.

He has been fined just over 1,000 US dollars plus a symbolic additional euro.

The prosecution had demanded he be fined 2,500 dollars.
