Meanwhile, a Waikato primary school will be closed today because of a tornado that ripped through the grounds.

The mini tornado struck Orini Combined School, east of Huntly, shortly before 3pm yesterday, as a run of severe thunderstorms hit the North Island.

It uprooted an oak tree, which toppled over, destroying a classroom and a library.

Orini Combined School principal Chrissy Wakeman was relieved it happened over the weekend when the school was empty.

The school hopes to reopen tomorrow.
