Hundreds of protesters have marched through Sydney to call for detainees on Nauru and Papua New Guinea's Manus Island to be allowed to stay in Australia.

The Manus centre is to be closed on the last day of this month.

Refugee advocates who led the protest say the detainees should be resettled in Australia.

More than 20 men who'd been detained on Manus left to be resettled in the United States last month as part of a refugee swap between Washington and Canberra.
