An investigation is underway after a wastewater spill into a tributary of the Mangoatuku Stream in New Plymouth that has the potential to affect public health.
The discharge, at Gilmour Street in Westown, started at 11.06am and was ongoing.
Council staff were on-site clearing a blockage.
Warning signs against swimming for 48 hours and collecting kai for 28 days, were being erected at affected water bodies.
The cause of the discharge was unknown.
