Australia are out of the World Twenty20 cricket tournament in England after losing by six wickets to Sri Lanka at Trent Bridge in Nottingham.
After a succession of top and middle order batting failures, Australia did well to reach 159 for nine from their 20 overs, but on the back of half centuries by Kumar Sangakkara and Tillakaratne Dilshan Sri Lanka reached their target with an over to spare.
Australia lost their opening pool game to the West Indies by seven wickets.
Their defeat capped a nightmare tour following the dismissal of big-hitting all-rounder Andrew Symonds, who was sent home in disgrace last week over disciplinary issues.
Meanwhile Ireland, a non-Test playing nation, have qualified for the second round from group A, along with the defending champions India, after beating Bangladesh by six wickets.
