The Ecumenical Centre for Reasearch, Education and Advocacy, says the looting of Hindu temples in Fiji shows the high level of inter-ethnic tensions.
Police say they believe youths have stolen money and other goods in two temples in Nausori and set the store and restroom of a third on fire.
Investigations are continuing.
The NGO's director, Chantelle Khan, says it condemns the incident.
"Three temples being trashed, burned and looted in Nausori is very unacceptable to Fiji and our constitution of 1997, which promotes and upholds the freedom of expression and the right to worship. We see this a a pure and brutal act of sacrilege and we can attribute it to hooliganism; but this is more to do with ethnic animosity and misunderstanding in our country. At this particular time, we need to work together."
Chantelle Khan says the whole community must work together to get the message across to respect each other's religions.
