Helpers struggle to reach cut-off communities

17:01 pm on 1 June 2010

Emergency workers in Central America are struggling to get help to communities cut off by Tropical Storm Agatha.

The storm has killed more than 100 people since Saturday, most of them in Guatemala.

Rescuers are digging in search of dozens of people still missing after landslides destroyed entire communities.

The worst-hit country has been Guatemala, where officials say at least 82 people died. Nine died in El Salvador and at least eight in Honduras.

President Alvaro Colom of Guatemala says parts of the country have had their highest rainfall in more than 60 years.

Agatha is now dissipating, but more heavy rain is forecast.
