A body found at a Christchurch beach on Wednesday morning could be a 19-year-old who went missing in May.
The remains were found at Redcliffs Beach and police said they had been in the water for some time.
Formal identity would take time due to this, a police spokesperson said.
However, police have contacted several families of missing people, to find out more about what the people were wearing when they went missing.
One of those missing people is 19-year-old Lindley Khendall Ilog, who went missing from nearby New Brighton Beach in May.
Ilog, often called Khendall, was last seen at New Brighton Pier at 10pm on 1 May, his family say on social media.
The remains were found with the same clothes he went missing in: a long-sleeved shirt, pants and white shoes, his brother Nycos Ilog told the NZ Herald.
Ilog was quiet but studious and his brother said he hoped to give him a "proper goodbye" should his body be found.
When Ilog went missing, people helped search the beaches around New Brighton to find him.
About $2000 was raised via a Givealittle page, with the funds being put aside for a proper send-off when found.
Detective Inspector Nicola Reeves earlier said the body did not appear to have any links to the search for missing real estate agent Yanfei Bao.
