A surfer in Christchurch has been rescued this morning after they had to take refuge on rocks.

The Coastguard was called to Sumner Beach at 8am today.

A spokesperson said the surfer made it to the rocks where they were winched off by a rescue helicopter after being caught in a rip.

St Johns said the surfer was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
