A five-year-old child has been killed on a driveway- the fourth such death this year.
The boy fell underneath a trailer being towed by a four wheel drive in Pokeno, south of Auckland on Tuesday.
Police say it's understood the boy and a sibling were riding on the trailer when he fell under it, and died at the scene.
The Serious Crash Unit is investigating and the death will be referred to the coroner.
A spokesperson for Safe Kids Aotearoa, Ann Weaver, says families need to constantly supervise children even when they're playing on private property.
Three other deaths have occurred this year, two in Auckland and one in Southland.
- 8 March: A seven-year-old child was killed at a rural property near Wallacetown, in Southland, after being hit by a reversing vehicle on a driveway.
- 28 March: An 18-month-old girl was run over in a driveway in West Auckland.
- 9 April: A 23-month-old boy was hit by a reversing vehicle in Papatoetoe.
At least two children have been injured in similar incidents this year. In January, a two-year old girl was knocked over by a car in the driveway of her South Auckland home and suffered cuts to the head, and on 12 April a nine-year-old boy was injured when he slipped under a trailer in Takanini.
