More than 80 Northland secondary school students are learning how to to be possum pluckers this week.

The Year 11 to 13 students from more than a dozen schools have enrolled in a training workshop and camp which will introduce them to the techniques of trapping possums and harvesting the fur and skins.

It gives them the chance to earn NCEA credits as well as a few dollars.

Enviroschools Northland, the regional council and the Department of Conservation introduced the Project Possum programme to schools last year.
