A Manurewa woman who kicked her neighbour's puppy off her property, breaking its jaw, has been disqualified from owning pets for five years.

Police said Kelly Leef pleaded guilty to ill-treating an animal when she appeared in the Manukau District Court on Wednesday.

Police said Leef kicked her neighbour's 14-week-old labrador crossbreed when it was on her property in July last year and the dog's owner assaulted her partner in retaliation.

After being X-rayed by the SPCA, the puppy was given pain relief and returned to its owner.

Police say Leef has been fined $1000, ordered to pay reparation of more than $500 and disqualified from owning animals for five years.
