Two sections of Christchurch's city centre damaged in the February earthquake have been opened to the public on Friday afternoon.
The first is bordered by Colombo, Peterborough, Durham, and Kilmore streets.
Of about 20 buildings that used to be there, only five remain - the rest had to be demolished.
Michael Turner, who owns Cafe Valentino on Colombo Street, says the reduction of the cordon means businesses in the area can finally start rebuilding or fixing what is left of their shops.
The second section to reopen is a triangular area within Madras, Tuam and High streets.
While no buildings in this block are marked for demolition, the future of many is uncertain.
