The government is contemplating building modular houses to cope with the shortage of social housing in Auckland.
Social Housing Minister Paula Bennett says if the scheme goes ahead, between 130 and 150 modular homes would initially be built to test whether they're fit for purpose.
Mrs Bennett says the government's weighing up options around modular housing because Housing New Zealand has a 97 percent occupancy rate in Auckland.
She says if it does go ahead people could be living in the modular houses by April next year.
