Pakistanis amazed by Ponting's decision to bat first in Leeds

10:19 am on 22 July 2010

The Pakistani pace bowler Umar Gul says he was shocked by Australian captain Ricky Ponting's decision to bat first in the second test at Headingley which resulted in one of Australia's lowest test totals ever.

Pakistan's pace bowlers took advantage of ideal atmospheric conditions to roll Australia for just 88, and Ponting's shell-shocked bowling attack couldn't utilise the same conditions as Pakistan reached 148 for 3, losing two wickets late in the day.

Gul who took 2 for 16 said the pitch had looked dry on top but had moisture underneath it from the heavy recent rain in Leeds.

Australia's previous lowest score was 76 against the West Indies on a lightning fast Perth pitch against a great West Indies pace attack.

Heavy showers are predicted for the second day.
