Police earlier said there were concerns for the occupants of a stolen vehicle who abandoned it in the Lake Rotoraira area, south of Taupō, and may be ill-prepared for winter conditions.

The vehicle was stolen in the Rangitikei district last night and the occupants fled from police on Desert Road early this morning.

Police searching for the occupants have now located the parties involved.

In a statement, police said a man and a woman were now assisting with inquiries. Police thanked the public for their assistance.

The vehicle was earlier recovered near Lake Rotoraira on the Volcanic Loop Highway (SH46).

It was being forensically examined.
